Music is an integral part of life at Maidstone Grammar School. All Maidstonians, whether they are experienced performers or a complete novices, are encouraged to develop and explore their musical talents.

Our purpose built Performing Arts Block opened in September 2017 and is home to our state of the art recording studios, music technology room, music classrooms, drama studio and music practice rooms.

All Maidstonians are encouraged to pursue music as a disciple and our wide selection of instruments and recording equipment are accessible to all. In addition to formal study, our musicians are encouraged to get involved in many of the co-curricular opportunities we provide, which include: MGS Concert Band (Woodwind, Brass & Percussion – all players welcome), MGS Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello & Double Bass – all players welcome), MGS Big Band (Woodwind, Brass & Rhythm Section – audition) and MGS Singers (all welcome). Maidstonians are also encouraged to form rock bands and other groups with players who are of a similar playing standard.

Musicians at MGS have at least one major live performance each term. In recent years, the School has put on ‘Little Shop of Horrors,’ ‘Bugsy Malone’, ‘Treasure Island’, ‘DNA’, ‘School of Rock’, ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’, and ‘Zorro!’.  In addition to the performance of a play or musical, there are also Showcases which are a chance for a variety of performances to showcase their talents to a live audience.

Instrumental lessons are available during the school day for all students. We recruit and work with highly skilled peripatetics who offer a wide range of instruments including: drums, guitar, piano, brass, woodwind, strings and voice.

The MGS Choir meets weekly for rehearsals and performs publicly at least twice a year, as well as in assemblies and other in-house events. Crowd favourites include ‘Chasing Cars’ by Snow Patrol, ‘Welcome to the Rock’ from ‘Come From Away’ and ‘This is Me’ from ‘The Greatest Showman.
