Career and Labour Market Information

Gatsby Benchmark 2: Learning from career and labour market information states:

Every student, and their parents/carers should have access to good quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities. They will need the support of an informed adviser to make the best use of available information.

Labour Market Information (LMI) is information which relates to the labour market such as data on employment, wages, qualifications, job openings and working conditions.

There is no point in choosing a career path or job that is in severe decline, or is not available in your chosen geographical area. LMI can help you determine:

  • Which industries and sectors are employing people
  • What hours, wages and working conditions can realistically be expected
  • Which job sectors are growing in the future
  • Where there might be opportunities for self-employment or new business development
  • Which new skills or qualifications which would greatly improve prospects of gaining employment in a particular industry or sector

Our students have access to a large number of careers resources in school, which provide up-to-date, independent, impartial sources of information about career opportunities, options in further and higher education, employment and much more. These are available in the school Careers Library and online.

As part of our Careers Programme in MGS, our students (and parents) are introduced to a range of useful sources of Careers and Labour Market Information in from Year 8 upwards. These resources include Morrisby Careers and the National Careers Service plus other resources listed below and in our Further & Higher Education and Employment & Apprenticeships sections.
