Work Experience

Gatsby Benchmark 6 (Experience of workplaces) states:

Every student should have first-hand experiences of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities, and expand their networks

  • By the age of 16, every pupil should have had at least one experience of a workplace, additional to any part-time jobs they may have.

  • By the age of 18, or before the end of their study programme, every student should have had at least one further experience of a workplace, additional to any part-time jobs they may have

MGS Work Experience Programme

A useful and relevant work experience placement is a positive experience, which is valued by our students. It enhances future university and employment applications, and for some degree courses, will be essential.

We have a well-developed work shadowing/work experience programme that spans KS3, KS4 and KS5 and takes place in the summer term each year.

  • All students in Year 8 are required to undertake a one-day work shadowing placement with a company of their choice
  • All students in Year 10 and Year 12 are required to undertake a one-week work experience placement with a company of their choice. (Year 12 students are able to undertake a two-week placement, with prior permission)
  • We also encourage students to seek additional work experience opportunities during the school holidays, particularly those aiming for competitive careers and courses

Students are responsible for organising their own placements, with support from family and school. Students are encouraged to be ambitious and try to set up a work experience in an area relevant to their career or further study interests.  Although most students stay in the UK, each year some students use family contacts to obtain a placement abroad.

Many students use contacts through family and friends to find a placement. We also have an extensive database of work experience contacts that we have built up over a number of years which is available for our students to use.
